THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF ESI:
ESI
- is a voluntary system designed to improve the environmental performance of sea going vessels;
- is an instrument to visualize the environmental performance of ships regarding air pollutants and CO2;
- will only do so for ships that perform over and above current international legislation (IMO);
- takes the NOx and SOx emissions directly into account and rewards documentation and management of energy efficiency; PM10 is indirectly included because of its strong relationship to SOx;
- can be applied to all types of seagoing ships;
- is easy to establish and to obtain for such ships;
- is simple in approach and presentation;
- is free of charge for ship owners.
